Last night I was presented with two very opposing reactions to the same show.
One was in the form of a tweet to me that read:
” PLEASE for the love of all things good listen: If your lead singer is female she MUST have sex appeal and style. MUST”
with a follow up by the same woman that said:
” ONE MORE TIME. A female in a band MUST look hot…MUST. Marketing no brainer. Also…talk less if you have to force it.”
Look, not everyone loves our music. And I can understand that. But this rubbed me the wrong way for a different reason. This woman truly believes that my value as a performer means nothing unless I am attractive and dress sexy because I am a woman.
I want to make this very clear.
If I want to wear one of Tony’s shirts and a pair of jeans on stage I will. If I want to wear a short dress with tights I will, and I do frequently. But, I will NEVER base the value of myself as an artist or as a woman on how much people find me attractive.People like the guys I met last night in the photo above treat me with respect as a performer because of how I performed. And that was the other reaction I got last night. And that one is the one that matters.
They made me feel beautiful because of their overwhelming love for my band’s music.
And that is all a performer who is also a woman should worry about.
